Hospital NPO Protocol Development

A published QI initiative that improved patient safety and nursing practice at the system level.

Dr. Migdale led a Quality Improvement initiative during her PM&R residency focused on developing a comprehensive hospital protocol for patients placed on NPO (Nothing by Mouth) status — a high-risk moment in inpatient care that had lacked standardized guidance.

Working with multidisciplinary teams, she streamlined communication pathways, enhanced patient safety protocols, and improved care processes related to dietary restrictions. The project resulted in the successful implementation of the Frasier Free Water Protocol into the hospital's Epic system — automatically triggered whenever an NPO order was placed.

She also developed and delivered nursing training on the Frasier Free Water Protocol, ensuring consistent and effective application across the unit.
